Knock, Knock

In the recent newspaper comic strip, “WuMo” a cartoon character returned to his apartment to find a note taped to the door which said, “I knocked and knocked – sorry I missed you! [Signed] Opportunity.” For me the cartoon character is a perfect illustration of the self-deluded church in Laodicea. The Lord says to this church, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me” (Rev 3:20 NIV).

Gail;

-----What on earth would make someone oblivious to opportunity’s knock on the door? What greater opportunity could knock upon a door than that which knocks upon Laodicea’s? This connection you’ve made for us leads to an answer. Let’s explore.
-----The Laodicean’s are neither hot nor cold. This is a condition. A condition is the expression of a process, like the condition of a volcanic eruption is the expression of intense pressures within underground magma breaking through the cold plug of earth. What is the process leading to Laodicea’s being neither hot nor cold?
-----The Lord stated two realities concerning Laodicea’s situation. First, they measure themselves as prosperous unto being rich. Being convinced they have no needs, they consider themselves so entirely fulfilled in knowledge and understanding that everything they do is God‘s will. Second, they actually do not know or understand the Lord at all, for they haven’t been looking at Him to know wealth, they’ve been looking at themselves. So, they are poor and lacking in understanding, so much so that they do not even realize they’ve come to be looking at themselves while thinking they are seeing Him. They are then completely unclothed by the works He prepared beforehand for them to walk in (Eph 2:10,) since they see their own works as those. They are naked without His good works.
-----It is necessary for us to measure ourselves. But not to find security in our successes. (Prov 27:2) We measure the Lord to find our security in His success. We measure ourselves to find our need for repentance in what we are. That is, we come to Him to buy the gold. What is the gold’s price? His life paid for our sins received through our attention paid to Him. It sounds rather trite to simply say the process leading Laodiceans to not hear His knock is their listening to their own ideas about Him instead of listening to Him. But it boils down precisely to that. And it is why God’s introduction to Moses was as I AM THAT I AM. If we are not careful to abide in that concept, we too might hear I AM WHAT YOU THINK IAM knocking at the door instead of Jesus.

Love you all,
