Absorbing

Recently my sister came to live with me and my mother became a nursing home resident. In closing down their apartments I’ve tried to absorb their things, so I now have multiples of everything. Together we have three irons, five coffee pots and nine vacuums of various sizes and descriptions. Our combined plethora of cleaning supplies can’t even be condensed into a few bottles because they’re all different brands. I’m struggling with my inheritance of household duplications. Trying to find God in the situation made me think of how Jesus absorbed our collective sins on the cross…and I thought I had multiples to deal with!

Gail;
-----Jesus was a really provocative type guy. That is why it is so dangerous to get to know Him. His ideas can truly chew away at your assets, plus they can cause us some bona fide headaches trying to figure out where they apply, and where they do not. Jesus said that if you have two coats, give one to somebody who needs one. So how would we figure this? There must be four people in your household, now, and there are nine vacuums, five coffee pots and three irons. So do this: find someone to trade you another iron for one of your coffee pots, and then, give away five vacuums. Maybe you can throw in a few cleaning supplies to sweeten the deals. But that strategy might break down if we were to consider the possibility that the household, itself, needs only one iron, one coffee pot, and one vacuum. Then you might get rid of a lot more cleaning supplies trying to sweeten a lot more deals. On the other hand, did Jesus use the coat in His analogy because the coat was such an important and expensive item in His day? Where does that leave such trivia as irons, coffee pots, and vacuums? It is not vital to our health or welfare if our clothes look a bit frumpy as we ourselves appear somewhat groggy in the morning while trying to sweep the dirt off the carpet. Irons, coffee pots, and vacuums make life much more comfortable, but few folks have shriveled up and died for lack of them. So maybe they don’t even count in Jesus’ equation. But wait! Joy is one of the three elements of the kingdom of Heaven, and we are much more joyful in pressed clothes, all caffeined-up, and not having a carpet smelling of deep dirt and other nasty flecks. Maybe these things do count in the two-coat/no-coat principle. Gee, Gail, I guess your problem appears much worse, now that we’ve given it some thought.
