Fully Dressed

I talked to a pastor friend about visiting churches and he cautioned me to be careful. Reading between the lines he thought I might get sucked into false teachings. I found it curious. I don’t know whether his warning was a way of watching over the flock, or if he felt that clergy are better equipped than laity to spot erroneous teachings. Whatever his thought processes, he misjudged my biblical foundation; and unfortunately he failed to see me as one dressed in the Armor of God. “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (Eph 6:13 NIV).

Gail;

-----In Romans 14 Paul says everyone should be convinced in his own mind. In I Corinthians 13 he says we all see dimly as in a mirror. Yet he tells Timothy to guard the truth that was entrusted to him and that there are doctrines of demons spread by liars. He tells the Corinthians that knowledge puffs up and then prays that the Philippians might abound more and more with knowledge. How far does errant knowledge and bad doctrine have to go before it becomes deceitful lies and doctrines of demons?
-----I’ve always loved Mustangs. There’s just something about that car’s basic design. It doesn’t matter what year one was made, whenever I see one I know I’m looking at a Mustang even though I can’t tell you what year it was made or what model it is or what engine it has or type of transmission or final drive gear ratio. But I can tell it is for getting in and going. And for people like me, it is for owning with pride and care (even though I’ve never owned one. Probably so I wouldn’t be filled with pride.) The honesty of my relationship with Mustangs shows in my knowledge of their utility regardless of the lack of my knowledge about their specs and measurements.
-----Our relationship with the Lord is much like that. There is a certain knowledge of utility which applies to our behaviors and attitudes, and another knowledge of technicalities which serves…well…I guess just knowing. And there’s nothing wrong with just knowing, as long as your relationship remains with the Lord in all good behaviors and attitudes rather than with just knowing some details. I think it is very sad the technicalities and details which are fuzzily seen in the foggy mirror of this life are given by so many church “leaders” as reasons not to enjoy good behavior and attitudes with folks who gather to worship the same God in other places in different mannerisms according to variant specs and details. They say it is so we are not led astray. But I take it that maybe to them, “astray” means “away from my church“. If they were right, Heaven would be a mighty sparsely populated place since, I guess, only one of them could be right about their church being the church. It’s kind of funny, really.

Love you all,
