Signs of the Times

Bill received a weather station as an early Christmas present and son-in-law Tim helped him install the sensor on the peak of the house. With the wireless remote now on a shelf in the house we don’t even have to poke out nose out the door to know what the weather is like…wind speed, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and rainfall totals. As much as were going to enjoy our new toy, I’m also reminded of Jesus’ thoughts about the weather watchers of his time. When the Pharisees and the Sadducees demanded Jesus give them a sign from heaven he said, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times” (Matt 16:2-3 NIV).

Gail;

-----I was always incredibly curious about why Jesus scolded the Pharisees for seeking signs when signs were given. Even more curious to me are the multitudes of siblings in the Lord who upbraid others for trying to see the signs of Lord’s in the present situations when Jesus indeed told us to watch for His coming. But the dissolution of my perplexity about both was the non-existence of a silver platter for all the signs. The Pharisees wanted Jesus to serve them up some inarguable evidence on a silver platter. Some siblings in the Lord find evidences of His soon coming hidden under the silver lids on the silver platter. I’m sure God has an immense supply of very beautiful silver platters. But, with the exception of the many signs He did serve upon those platters during His life and through His apostles (and through many disciples thereafter,) raisings form the dead, healings of infirmities, the Shroud of Turin and the Oveido cloth, and the likes, those platters just aren’t for us at this time. There will be plenty of signs upon them during the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, but then, those signs won’t be so much about His coming as they will be about His being.
-----For us are signs of the times. Some of these are things that have happened throughout history, others are things happening currently, and yet others are information from His Word. What makes signs in all of this is how all the details fit into sort of pictures, like do assembled jigsaw puzzle pieces. For example, when you let the Bible supply the objects of its own metaphors and allusions, even the letters to the seven churches in Revelation are discernable as prophecy right up to our own day by the way history has laid itself out. Many people deny this because its evidence could never be found under a lid on a silver platter. To the contrary, indeed, it has to be assembled yourself from other things you’ve come to know. And frankly, many, many people have been fooled into believing that if they do not know something, well, it must not exist. That’s not having eyes to see and ears to hear. Instead of silver platters for the signs He gives, He delivers signs to us through eyes to see and ears to hear.
-----”Oh! Well! That’s all good and subjective!” says the fool who thinks never upon the Lord. Sorry for the strong attitude, but the statement seems too picturesque to be totally invalid.

Love you all,
