Gail;
-----Old is a friend, not to hang with, but to learn from. It is always beside us, never in the same form, but always taking the form of what was new. Nothing of this temporal world stays new. It always turns old. If by the time we’ve turned gray what was relevant when we were children has not become irrelevant, give it time; it will become irrelevant before we are nothing more in this temporal world than a mark on a tombstone and a few scattered, skimpy memories in a couple great-grandchildren. Old is relentless in its taking away. This is its friendship. -----New is the way of joy. In this temporal world it is the friend we hang with. Old teaches new is worth the wait. All of the vexing troubles, difficulties, and embarrassments chaos stacks upon the newness of life ordered within us do go away, although no faster than their replacements come. Yet, because they are of our temporal nature, even of their replacements coming and have come we can be assured they too will pass. But joy will not pass. Peace comes and collects all the more as we learn from the old friend that vexations has its end. -----This is what the New Year has come to mean to me. It is once more the arrival of something to become old and go away. It is not what I am waiting for, although it is what I must momentarily enjoy. But all of the oldness going accentuates the newness coming of the different nature. It’s place is not to perfect things here, but to ever improve them. Peace through hope for doing all things right forever brushes over the trails old leaves. So in peacefulness we can joyfully blaze new trails doing things ever a little more right than we did them of old. -----Yes. Old is a friend of ours. But new are we. Christ gave us new. It is a currency not of this temporal nature for us to invest for bigger returns to come. This is what the New Year represents to me. “Of old Thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Thy hands. They will perish, but Thou dost endure; they will all wear out like a garment. Thou changest them like raiment, and they pass away; but Thou art the same, and Thy years have no end.” (Ps 102:25-27)
