We anticipate changes in career
and life situations as not only bettering ourselves, but also giving us an
element of control over our own destiny. God swore to the forefathers of the
Israelites that they would possess a land flowing with milk and honey; however,
there were caveats. Moses said, “The land you are entering to take over is not
like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed
and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. But the land you are
crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys
that drinks rain from heaven. It is a land the LORD your God cares for;
the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the
year to its end” (Deut 11:10-12 NIV). And then some of us seem surprised when
we wind up in a land/career/situation where God is the Caretaker.

-----Fortunately, the world isn’t what it seems. We know only what we’ve experienced and what we can deduce from that. We learn from what others know, too. But they know by only the same ways we do. Sometimes we must build unfamiliar mental structures in order to understand what we learn from others. But our experiences are common enough for that to be possible, though sometimes difficult. Yet reality is so vast that everything the most experienced of us has experienced isn’t really much of it at all. And then, there are the things we learn from the Lord. His Spirit works in us by ways we just don’t know. He works some of the stuff beyond our understanding, like Paul said, there are things of heaven man’s mind just can not grasp. And so there are of the Spirit, His being of heaven. Even knowing that I misperceive maybe more than I properly perceive, I am certain of my security in His places, because He doesn’t misperceive, and He loves us in truth, which is to satisfy our needs as He perceives needs to be. The world seems like a chaotic, haphazard place of violence and disregard. But even its violence, disregard, and chaos serve the Lord’s purposes, working towards that day when all things done on earth will be His will done, the world having become His kingdom (Revelation 10:15,) just as we pray it to be.
