Recently I
had lunch at a restaurant with some fellow-believer girlfriends of more than 40
years and we talked about health, friends and family. However, for the first
time ever we did not mention our ministry efforts, activities in the church, or
the direction of the local church. There was a time when our lives and
conversation revolved around the church, but that is no longer the case.
Similar to what the world is experiencing in volunteerism, Christian service in the church is
waning. It’s not that Christians don’t
want to serve, but our individual ministry endeavors are taking a precedence over the collective ministry. Paul said, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not
men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good
he does, whether he is slave or free” (Eph 6:7 NIV).
