At a luncheon
I sat with a woman who moved back to town, the town of her youth, a couple
years ago. I asked if she was established with a church and she lamented she
just couldn’t get re-connected to a church because no one could take the place
of a former beloved local pastor, who is now deceased. A little later in the
conversation she told me she and her family recently joined the Elks Club and
how excited they were to be connected to the community. The writer of Hebrews
said, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is
faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another
on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting
together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one
another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb 10:23-25 NIV).
