In the early
church Paul identified eating meat sacrificed to idols as a possible stumbling
block to others. However, he then expanded his thought to encompass everything
we do. Paul said, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all
for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble,
whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to
please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of
many, so that they may be saved” (1 Cor 10:31-33 NIV). We normally think in
terms of causing an individual to stumble, but it should give us pause to think
that a person, or persons, could cause the church to stumble.
