Arbiter for the Spirit

My pianist friend was in charge of the music sets for her congregational worship, but a church administrator asked her substitute other selections. When the pianist explained she could not and would not make last minute changes, the administrator said, “Well, you obviously aren’t listening to the moving of the Spirit.” To her credit the administrator came back later to the pianist and apologized; however, it is clear that the administrator thinks she is an arbiter for the Spirit. Paul said, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like–minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:1-4 NIV).
