A Body at Rest

A current television commercial is bombarding the airwaves with Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion, ‘a body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rest tends to stay at rest’. Today’s church is programmed and focused on being in motion and purpose driven. Being at rest is not a part of our vocabulary; it is rarely mentioned from the pulpit and seldom seen in Bible studies. But Scripture reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalms 46:10 NIV)

Gail;

-----Effort and zeal and activity will go anywhere they are aimed. History is made more of their poorly aimed tragedies than well aimed successes. God determined to neither require people to succeed on their own, nor to make all their success by His efforts alone. He gives some responsibility to a person, and some He keeps. Both work towards a goal.
-----God’s effort and zeal and activity in a person’s life is mostly subtle. But it can be detected by the heart which truly wants to know it. If you want to know what is rippling the smooth surface of a pond, hold still so you don’t cause any ripples yourself, then trace the ripples which remain back to their source. If you want to know what direction the Lord might be tending your life, get still and trace the ripples which remain.
-----I’ve seen hurt and anger caused by people sure they knew God’s direction without discerning His actual movements. Maybe for their own lives and affairs they do. But too many active people think their actions are God’s, and so their actions must be reflected in the lives of others. If the ripples they cause are harmonious with God’s, then very well, little harm will be done. The problem is, most people have a hard time keeping quiet enough to know God’s ripples in their own ponds, let alone His in the ponds of others. They wind up off course. When they then go peddle to the metal, everyone had better run for cover.

Love you all,
