God’s Policies
The Pope recently weighed in
on US immigration policy and said he feels America should be more compassionate
toward illegal aliens. It’s as though he thinks our higher standard of living
somehow obligates the US to open its boarders. While I appreciate the Pope’s
passion for the disadvantaged, it is not his place to judge a nation or direct
its path. He should be mindful that positions and wealth, or lack thereof, of
all the nations is controlled by God. The psalmist said, “For God is the King
of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over
the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. The nobles of the
nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the
earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted” (Psalm 7:7-9 NIV).

-----Although God controls the positions, wealth, and poverty of all nations, He does not just plop a people down and hand them the gold He takes from others. People do things and thus order their affairs into the positions and wealth or poverty God commands for them. Often, most always, I suppose, the things people do are, in some significant part, responses to things done to them or conditions befallen them. The pompous, hatefully arrogant, unworthy of association with human nature ways the despotic kings of the centuries through the Medieval, Reformation, and Renaissance times persecuted others for mere religious beliefs primed the thinking which led many persecuted souls to the New World. There they invested the ideas of the Scottish Moralists into their political and economic associations. From that came personal freedom within a constrained government. Like the combination of a seed, good soil, and water produces a strong, fine tree, personal freedom, strong moral philosophies, and a place to do things the way things make sense grew a strong, economically vibrant, wealthy, God honoring nation having His fingerprints all over its development.
-----God casts nations down the same way He raises them up. Wealth is a hypnotic substance. It holds emotional sway. Emotions inspire mental imagery. Mental imagery fosters attitudes which are the biases guiding more thoughts. It does not take very many generations of abundant wealth to darken the mind’s ability to relate poverty driven hard work to comfortable prosperity. Eventually a substantial portion of the fattened population will begin to perceive their affairs as the mere harvest of a self-surviving, naturally occurring, porky tree.
-----The Pope seems to have overlooked the careful, mental work, exhaustively unending research, and humble dependence upon God’s participation that wisdom, knowledge, and understanding necessitate. Thus, he has just plucked another sweet-looking apple from the big-lib tree and bit into its foolish poison. But then should we expect such a one-pony show as is the Papacy to proceed from anything more than a one-thought pony? “Give to the poor, give to the poor, rrraaaq, give to the poor.” Just pluck those fat apples off America’s porky tree and pass ‘em around. That’s like taking poor folks right past “GO” without giving them one sincere thought and throwing them into the jail of irresponsibility towards self and others, of no place or supply to call their own lest it be given by others, and the disrespect towards others it takes to expect a living on their time. The poor need more than just money. "Teach a man to fish..."
-----Generosity is basic to the new life. For the most part, it is the word in the New Testament replacing the “tithe” of the Old Testament (sorry folks, the New Testament does not teach tithing.) But generosity is nothing without love. Nothing is anything without love. And love is basically working towards, if you can, or if you can’t, wanting and praying for the good of others and yourself in any given situation. “Do good to all men,” as Paul tells the Galatians. Therefore, the good that generously needs given to the poor extends beyond handouts to revival and edification of their work spirit as well. The good needing generously given illegal aliens is edification of their law biding spirit and easy directions to back home. And the good needing generously given Muslim refugees is a thorough and close examination for jihadist intruders before their swearing to bring forth America’s from their Umma, else a quick ticket back across the pond. We’ve got to be generous. But first, we must be loving. And that requires an easily attainable amount of wisdom and understanding.
