Dealing With the Stink

Over the weekend the water pipes under my 93-year-old mother-in-law’s modular house froze and to add to the dilemma six skunks moved in to get out of the cold. Thankfully water line thawed out, but in a catch-22, the plumber refuses to go under the house until the exterminator gets rid of the skunks…which could be time consuming when setting traps. I hate to bring such an unspiritual stink to the Lord, but Peter did say, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV).

Gail;

-----Sometime in my early adolescence, Dad had a friend with a pet skunk. This friend had a scheduled trip to somewhere, I don’t think I ever learned that part of Dad’s story. But the skunk needed boarding, and Dad agreed. So they set up a cage, I guess to the skunk -a motel, behind the old cream house on Dad’s trout farm.
-----One morning, a few days into this skunk’s sojourn, Dad found a skunk wandering around the edge of a fish pond. I’m not too sure I would be so speculative, but Dad completely presumed this was his guest-skunk. So he simply walks up to it and picks it up by the tail to carry it back to the little skunk motel. Problem was, there was no vacancy at the motel! His guest hadn’t checked out! Oh boy! What to do? What to do? I think it was like a bath in tomato juice or something. Ask LaVelle, She knows the story better than I do.
-----Old timers, which Dad is now, know that a skunk can’t spray unless it can hike its tail straight up. So Dad didn’t stink till he put the skunk down (which he should have done far enough under water to get away before it surfaced.) This is why you don’t have to worry about a skunk in a live trap. (Some disagree, but check out
www.taxidermy.net/forums/BeginnersArticles/01/1/0128111A40.html for a more professional opinion.)
-----Old timers are also more tolerant of the troubles an effort might make. Like, rather than wait when frozen pipes are needing fixed, an old timer might try smoking them out. It’d cause the house to smell smokey a while, but it would get the water back on quicker. Besides that, in the process, you could go inside and find all the spider holes where smoke is getting through. Plug those up and now 1) your pipes are fixed quicker, and 2) you’ve got less black widow worries.
-----There’s usually a small difference between an old timer and today’s liberal-influenced, regulation worshippin’, bed wettin’ pansy. Old timers think for themselves, except for the time tested and found true thinking of their ancestors. They just believe ‘em, which drives liberals nuts. The Bible is some of that time tested stuff. I guess that’s one of a few reasons old timers go to church more. Staring death in the face is another, normally it changes how one thinks about things. Unless you‘re a liberal, of course. I don‘t think liberals believe in their own demise, so they never stare death in the face, unless its yours!
