By definition, a blessing is
asking for God’s favor and protection. Recently a spiritual group reported on
their annual event of “Animal Blessings.” As though to showcase their
all-inclusiveness and outreach into the community they boasted that this year’s
event included blessing a roly-poly bug and a stuffed animal. I’m now trying to
figure out how an animal, or an inanimate object, knows when they have been
blessed. The Psalmist wrote, “May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the
peoples praise you. Then the land will yield its harvest, and
God, our God, will bless us. God will bless us, and all the ends
of the earth will fear him” (Psalm 67:5-7 NIV).
