I was taken aback
when the associate pastor, who is relatively new to the congregation, mentioned
he just finished his master’s and would someday like to be a professor. I now question
if he, as well as the church leadership who hired him, see his position with
our church simply as a stepping stone to becoming a college professor, rather
than a building block for the local church. Jesus said, “For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also…No one can serve two masters. Either
he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money” (Matt 6:21,24 NIV).
