In
preparation for writing a book I’m going through the articles I wrote about church
visits and categorizing the elements of worship — hospitality, sermons, bulletins,
etc. After reviewing the sermons, I realize that many of them were a social, political
and denominational gospel, rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Out of more
than 120 church visits there are only a handful of sermons that were convicting
and thought provoking enough for me to tell others about the message I heard. Paul
said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the
salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the
Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is
revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is
written: “The righteous will live by faith” (Ro 1:16-17 NIV).
