Webster’s
defines career as, “A profession for which one trains and which is undertaken
as a permanent calling.” Jesus and John the Baptist had similar career
skill-sets — preacher, baptizer, teacher, each was called Rabbi and had
disciples. Some of John’s disciples opined that people were going to
Jesus, rather than John, to be baptized. To this John replied, “A man can
receive only what is given him from heaven. You yourselves
can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him’ (John 3:27-28 NIV). All too often we feel that our career is
by our choice and our design. However, John reminds me that in my calling I am
sent and can receive only what is given me from heaven.
