Never Before

Over the years I’ve found it interesting to hear up-and-coming leaders tout a new program idea by saying, “We’ve never done anything like this here before.” The truth is, if they talked to the right people or visited with the old-timers they might discover that in fact it has been done before, many times. Next year my church celebrates its100th Birthday. I wonder what these newbie leaders think we’ve been doing all these years.

Gail;
-----“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, ‘Look! This is something new‘? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.” (Eccl 1:9-10). Solomon agrees with you, Gail. Our little lives are so tiny, yet our tiny heads are so big. It seems to be a condition of childhood which lingers into the adulthood of many people, a condition that so completely is absorbed in the existence of the self that the mind does not fully grasp the reality that others actually have different sets of experiences. It is a form of benign arrogance that forms the basic foundation for biases. Just to remind them that they are leaders because they are supposed to be a few steps further matured than the rest of the body, it would be beneficial to open up to them about when, where, and with what results it was tried there before. But you might want to have your doggy-bone handy, because next would be the doggy house for you for sullying the proclamation of a church leader.
