Devotional

Steve Corey posts comments on the blog and I’m always amazed at his in-depth response. I have to admit that I’ve often wondered, ‘Where and how does he come up with so many different facets to something that I think of as being just a simple observation? Do his thoughts from many years of study just float around in his head and when he needs to write them down they just spill out?’ Well, I recently learned Steve’s secret...and I’m so relieved. Using the blog for his daily devotion time, he makes it an opportunity to dig into the Word to fully understand what the Bible says on the topic of the day. Who would have thought that even in our devotional time there’s opportunity to go the extra mile?

Gail;

-----Life has always been for me an overwhelming jigsaw puzzle. Current events, both human and natural, history, science, and the Word of God all supply pieces of the puzzle. And I know they ultimately have only one definite fit like the pieces of any simple one that comes in a box. In as much as God made the puzzle before the foundation of the earth to present one definite picture at the completion of the time He has allotted for this era, I feel closer to Him the better I can understand the picture formed by the pieces already in place. And I feel more securely built into His plan if I can even somewhat anticipate the placement of the scattered pieces yet to be placed by Him. So I decided in High School that the basic nature of my being was to be a student of life as it intersects with His Word.
-----Each day you select from the myriads of pieces of life one finite piece for focused attention. As you have several times said to me, your blog offers the Lord’s people a time to become steal upon steal, sharpening any who wish to participate in reading or writing. I have relished each day’s sharpening stroke. It is teaching me to momentarily focus upon one small piece for the moment and find its possible relationship to the emerging picture of the whole puzzle by using the Word as light and clue. Out of the treasure of all the swirling thoughts in my mind His Word that is relevant to the topic you select snags a few thoughts of mine and forms a few more.
-----To my detriment and my family’s detriment, I have never properly respected the idea of daily devotions as most practice them. Spending time alone in the Word and prayer just seemed to leave somebody out - my brothers and sisters. Yet not spending that time seemed to also leave somebody out - the Lord. Oh, the mess I make of my life with my idiot thoughts! Though I attend to what seems, I ignore what is obvious. The devotional period and the day as well is for the Word to search me out from all the trash I make. I left myself out of my own relationship with the Lord by not understanding the nature of personal daily devotions.
-----But there has always been something healing for me about enjoying your blog, both in reading and writing. I find in it a few moments to use the Lord’s Word to brush away much of the garbage of my own mind from a topic you’ve chosen, and then to present the better of what is left to brothers and sisters in hope it might be a bit inspirational. So, I can sit here in total solitude and include in my devotions everyone who is important to me - My Lord, His Word, you and our brethren, and myself. And what is healing is that the Lord agrees with the very concept of your blog, “Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another; the Lord heeded and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who feared the Lord and thought on His name.” (Mal 3:16)

Love you all,
