Knowing the Basics

The Colorado State Patrol recently arrested a young man and cited him with marijuana possession. His defense was that the marijuana is the, “main sacrament of his religion” and compares his pot use with the wine and the bread Christians use for communion. I had more than a few reactions – laughter, indignation, sadness. Then I asked myself, ‘How would Jesus react?’ The Lord might focus on the fact that the kid at least knew that the wine and the bread are sacraments.

Gail;

-----My guess is that Jesus would react less to the guy’s pot use and more to his insincerity. Now, maybe the guy did fully and completely believe pot was the main sacrament of his religion. Maybe he believed it so much he would smoke pot even if he did not like it. That would be sincere. And I think Jesus would agree he was being sincere in his religion. But his insincerity is in thinking his religion is in any way a fellowship with God. Man fellowships with God in God’s religion, not his own, mostly because God fellowships with man in His religion, not man’s. Pot isn’t involved in that religion; Jesus is.
