Flourishing

My mother-in-law just turned 90, but we couldn’t celebrate this milestone with her until she returned home from a weeklong conference in Maine. A week after Ruth returned home we had an open house and invited friends and family to the Birthday celebration. As the party progressed I was getting weary, but I could hear Ruth visiting with friends and making plans for the conferences of 2014 in Reno and 2015 San Antonio. Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful that at 90 years of age Ruth is healthy and active, but I have to tell you she is making some of the rest of us look really bad. The Psalmist considers the advanced years of the righteous and says they will flourish like a palm tree, “They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” (Psalm 92:14-15 NIV)

Gail;

-----Some people outlive their wealth and die in poverty. So, it is wise to propose your wealth’s outliving you. Some people outlive their plans and die in mental wandering. Your mother-in-law is truly blessed in keeping her days numbered into plans. Old age necessarily squanders the mind not a bit more than by the physical deterioration of its nervous system. We squander the rest ourselves through slothful mental activity, some folks even achieving this before adulthood. Plans and their following actions are bones of mental life upon which countless thoughts and perceptions of life’s moments cling into meaningful shapes. That your mother-in-law always keeps ready a fresh set of plans means she will pass in the joy of constructing and maintaining a sound mind with which to do right and know the Lord. “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Ps 90:12)

Love you all,
