Cloaked Visions

My interviewee talked about how to get people on the same page and he said, “Most people identify the problem, but they are not problem solvers. The vision is the problem — reasons for differences are that everyone has a project, but they’ve never articulated a vision of where they are going.” A few years ago on the religious landscape the talk was all about the church vision and making vision statements. Leaders tried to articulate where they wanted to go, but I suspect many visions failed to came to fruition because the stated goal was not the real goal. For instance, the publically stated goal may be to “make and mature disciples,” however, the real goal in the heart of the leadership may be to build a mega-church. “All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD” (Proverbs 16:2 NIV).

Gail;

-----Getting people on the same page is the problem. I don’t see the Bible saying people need to be on the same page. I don’t see the Bible saying the church is some little battalion of people to be generaled by some pompous poop that thinks he’s got better visions than everyone else. The gathering of people together almost inevitably brings folks with overbearing natures to the surface like heat brings forth dross. Most organizations do need tight control because somebody has got to take charge of responsibilities. And that starts with the head of the organization, who, for the church, would be Jesus, if the little generals would politely step aside. People don’t have to be on the same page for church to happen, because church is not a project; it is the assembly of the saints. And amongst those saints, whosever will may like to join others in doing this or that, but to step personal interests up to becoming church missions and goals just plain usurps the place of the Holy Spirit and His Word. “Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lamp stand from its place, unless you repent.” (Rev 2:5) It does not say just “…remove your lamp stand.” The Lord said He would remove it from its place; it would become out of its position. Look at the church’s two thousand years of history. It’s had some enlightened activity. But it’s had far too little of it with all those big, pompous leaders eclipsing the lamp stand.

Love you all,
