In his
letter to the Ephesians Paul said, “Pray also for me, that whenever I open my
mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery
of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray
that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should” (Eph 6:19-20 NIV). I find it fascinating
that Paul’s focus is not on his chains, but rather on being an ambassador for
Christ. Many of us who work in the church have felt we too are in chains — teachers
in chains, leaders in chains, administrators in chains, organizers in chains,
etc. All too often when someone puts us in chains, rather than ignoring the
chains, we abandon our calling.
