A Rock and a Hard Place

Years ago in our small community it seemed everyone was so inter-connected they were either related by blood or very well acquainted. While Peter was making his third denial, “One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, ‘Didn’t I see you with him in the olive grove?’” (John 18: 26-27 NIV) Not only was Peter denying his relationship with Jesus, he was being questioned by a relative of the man whom he de-eared. I can imagine him thinking, ‘This guy wants to defend the family honor because I embarrassed Malchus when I cut off his ear.’ It appears Peter momentarily forgot he was a rock.

Gail;
-----It is passages like this one that give the Bible so much credibility. I have coined an expression I use regularly, “History loves a coincidence.” For instance, the day before Lindberg took off from New York to cross the Atlantic in the cutting edge technology of flight, the pilot of another plane in the effort, named “Columbia,” took off to give his daughter’s friend a ride. On take-off, bouncing into the air as those old planes tended to do, the left landing gear broke. There they were, in flight with an inevitable crash to be upon landing. Nearly eighty years later, in the cutting edge technology of space flight, with a passenger on board, upon take off the Columbia took a blow to her left wing near the landing gear bay. There they were, in flight with an inevitable crash to be upon landing. Also, after a thirteen year drought of Super Bowl wins, an AFC team finally wins the Super Bowl on January 25, 1998. The previous AFC team having won the Super Bowl was the LA Raiders of the AFC West Division as wild card entry into the playoffs, as was the next AFC team to win it a wild card entry from the AFC West Division - Denver Broncos. In Green Bay’s opening drive of that game, they made three plays in a row of thirteen yards each. Uh. Then we have all been worn out by all the coincidences surrounding the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations. History does love a coincidence, I am sure for no other purpose than amusement, but it does. So, here in the Bible is pointed out one of those little coincidences of history: Peter being properly questioned by a servant of the High Priest who was improperly questioning Peter’s master, and Peter’s inquisitor also being a relative of the one whose ear was lowered by Peter.
