Paranoid
We’ve all heard the saying, ‘Just because people say you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean someone’s not out to get you’. In my church it seems the senior saints program gets more confined, restricted and under funded all the time. For years our seniors have taken trips in the church vans and they always pay their own way, including gasoline expenses. We have seniors who are qualified van drivers, some with commercial driver’s licenses. However, now when a driver turns 70 years old they’re no longer allowed to drive the church van. The staff tells us this restriction is a requirement placed on the church by our insurance policy. Certainly the church could change insurance carriers, but the cost would be higher. Perish the thought of dipping into the offering nest egg that’s being nurtured. Personally I think the seniors are worth the investment.

-----Reflect upon the last two statements of my comment to your blog, of Jan 17, 08. Reflect upon the actions of your church leaders over these past ten years. Reflect upon all of the people who come to that Senior’s Sunday School class and the Senior’s Sunday evening services, yet who will not go to the Sunday morning services because they find no acknowledgement or welcome there. Reflect upon the elder candidate who withdrew from the confirmation process, the two elders who resigned from the board of elders, and the third who was convinced by the other elders to reconsider his resignation. It is the leaders who have been propping up the walls of partisanship in your church. It isn’t only their loud music that has driven a wedge of contempt between themselves and their senior brethren, it is their refusal to acknowledge the validity of what these brethren need. “Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another…” (I Pet 5:5) I believe that the tremors that keep rattling beneath the feet of your church may be the beginning of the spiritual consequences of their refusal to “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” (Rom 14:19.) They have even thrown out of their midst people who have tried to make peace. It is so sad to see this one small piece of our Lord’s body being destroyed by leadership that does not understand the simplicity of Micah 6:8, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God,” or the clues of Romans 14:16-18, “Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.” Good servants would not allow their programs to become pogroms slaying the needs of others. Good servants are careful to serve all who need, without partiality.
Regarding the age limit to drive a van - my husband turned 70 yesterday and therefore, no longer covered under our current insurance policy. Let's face it, we get what we pay for and to me, it would be well worth it to change to another insurance company!
