Recognizable
Queen Elizabeth is
scheduled to sign a document that officially recognizes same-sex unions in the
UK. Likewise, the State of Colorado is set to vote on and pass a civil union
bill. The Apostle Paul makes it clear that there is no difference between
practicing homosexuals and those who operate a Ponzi scheme or write lies in a
gossip tabloid. However, I do see one difference in today’s society, I can’t
ever remember a drunkard, swindler or slanderer coming out of the closet and
demanding to be recognized and accepted. I get weary of the accusation that
believers are ‘judging’ when in reality, those who are sexually immoral keep
insisting on shining the spotlight on themselves. Paul said, “Do you not know that the wicked will not
inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral
nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor
thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit
the kingdom of God.” (1 Cor 6:9-10

-----Why should the good Queen not recognize same-sex unions? Why should Colorado not give civil union to gays? As gays pour out of the closet, why should social norms not wrap loving acceptance around their desires, as well? These are just people with a particular proclivity that happens to be a little different than everyone else’s. They are as alive and human and intertwined with the network of humanity as are the heterosexuals. Their kindness and goodness spends as well amongst us as does any one else’s. Besides, the rest of us have the freedom to be heterosexual. Who has the right to restrain their freedom?
-----There is one good reason why the Queen and Colorado should wrap loving laws around gay folk. And it is a Biblical reason. Of course, as soon as we admit that reason, we must also admit the infinite complexity of the Word and wisdom of God. The reason? “Let God be true though every man be false.” (Rom 3:4). We are false. It's what we do.
-----Let’s recognize also that every reason which reaches into the depths of truth ties there to either benefit or detriment. What is the benefit of being false? Ignoring the overwhelming evidence supplied by countless studies, all vetted and found completely true? Homosexuality is by far the leading transmitter of aids. Its involvement in other diseases is also a well known elephant in the room. Nobody talks about another undeniable, homosexual reality: fecal matter everywhere. We’ve all seen those documentaries about illuminating with special lighting what lurks upon hotel and motel walls, floors, sheets, and pillowcases. Pillowcases!? Yah. Anyone with a healthy sex life knows how little attention is given to sanitation when the pony breaks to galloping. Feces! Imagine that! And imagine all the interpersonal deceit involved in accepting as a delight fecal matter spread around your bed, and your bedroom floors and walls. And pillowcases. Yah. It could only be appreciated by the truly false.
-----Come on, Queen! Come on, Colorado! There’s more good news to being deceived! Let’s just cast off all judgment! Well, maybe not all, because then gay spreaders couldn’t judge homophobes. (They need that right lest they be silenced.) One guy gets to make his judgment; the other gets a gag. That’s a nice little falsehood.
-----And you know, as long as we are on this judgment thing, something lurks in the deeper levels of information, moving through it in patterns unbreakable. The truth is bubbling to the surface things about the origin of God’s Word. It is like God is having a conversation with His deniers. They say, “David was a mythological character.” God guides an ancient Moabite inscription about the “House of David” into an archeologist’s hand. As archeology progresses into the dirts of the past it is becoming harder and harder to argue against the Bible's truth. God’s Word says homosexuality is just one of countless grapes for God’s winepress (which feels ominously near.)
-----Why should the Queen and Colorado not recognize gay unions? Should the government become a force exerted upon its people toward deceit? Or towards the truth? The argument should not be about homosexuality. Arrogant refusal to confess the falsehood that we are keeps us from both heaven then and sanity now. Confession turns us to the Gate through which both are reached. It is about acknowledging a process of dealing with our falsehoods before a truthful God. It's the best reason why not.
