Validation
A recent newspaper editorial criticized the
community for their “lackluster” involvement in the process of searching for a
new school district superintendent. Fifty people in the community have been
involved in meetings and 22 applied to serve on a search committee, which could
only accommodate 16 members. It begs the question of exactly how many involved
citizens there needs to be in order to satisfy participation standards of the newspaper
editorial staff — 75, 100, 150? I’m reminded of Abraham pleading with God for
Sodom and asking how many righteous people there needed to be in order for God
to spare Sodom — 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, 10.
It’s curious that man feels numbers somehow validate him and his opinions.

-----I think it might be a little dangerous to expect the community at large be involved in a search. We are merchants and waitresses and janitors and mechanics and farmers and doctors and landscapers and bankers and painters and well, you get the drift. Our skills are many and varied, but they don’t all include the skills to discern talents of other folks. Our knowledge is diverse, but we don’t all know what makes managerial abilities. Our relationships are several, but we don’t all know somebody who has the right stuff. Amongst the twenty two who stepped forward, the rest of us can hope that there are several who are qualified in the ways necessary to successfully find a replacement.
-----This point also sheds a bit of light on the disgusting state of affairs our once great country has become. Too many unqualified people have been stepping into the voting booths and selecting too many charlatans according to too much irrelevant and even deviant criteria.
