The political
and social landscapes seem to have lost all forms of civility and my sense is
that the religious landscape is in danger of following suit. In speaking of the
greatest commandment Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the
first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the
Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matt 22:37-40 NIV). There are some people
today who, like the expert in the law, might say, “And who is my neighbor” (Luke10:29
NIV)? The Parable of the Good Samaritan shows that loving our neighbor is not simply
a mental exercise, but it requires action.
