I
started going to the gym regularly and realized that people I once thought were just
naturally trim and had good genes work really hard to stay physically fit. These
are not folks with bulging muscles, but people who work as hard to stay in
shape as those of us are trying to get in shape. I suspect something similar
can be said about being spiritually fit. We simply can’t look at another person
of faith and know how many hours he spends in spiritual fitness training —Bible
study, prayer, fellowship with other believers, etc. Paul said, “For physical
training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding
promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy
saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive),
that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and
especially of those who believe” (1Tim 4:8-10 NIV).
