In
preparation for building a new house we sat down with a contractor and banker to
estimate the cost. We knew there would be some unexpected expenses; however, neither
we nor the builder expected the electric company to tell us we must upgrade their
transformer at the cost of $4,085.00. Spiritually speaking, there are costs,
even unexpected costs, associated with becoming a disciple. Jesus said, “Suppose
one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the
cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if
he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will
ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was
not able to finish’ (Luke 14:28-30 NIV).
