Obedience
After removing Saul God made David king and testified concerning him, “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” (Acts 13:22) Even though he’s described as a man doing everything God wanted him to do, I just can’t picture David as the poster child for obedience. As we strive to obey the Lord I suppose we can take some consolation in David’s example. Even if we were to do everything God wants us to do…there are always going to be some things He wishes we wouldn’t do!

-----We are too apt to consider David’s being “a man after God’s own heart” as being his impeccable behavior. We are a bit confused by his sins. We need to remember his repentance. He did that often. “Being after God’s own heart” is a journey. Any journey presumes a starting point and consists of motion towards a destination. The destination of David’s journey was God’s heart. His sins did not sway him from that goal; they were not as important to him as his continued motion towards God; therefore his repentance is recorded in the Psalms. In spite of his sins, he journeyed on towards his destination. That God calls this "being after God's own heart" is testimony to His mercy more than to David's obedience.
