In the Line of Duty

Most careers don’t put us in life threatening situations and I think we sometimes underestimate the cost to those who do serve in dangerous occupations. Yesterday three of our police officers were shot in the line of duty and tragically, one was a fatality. I think many times we believers also underestimate the cost of following Christ…and we fail to realize we are always on duty. It seems appropriate to recall Jesus’ words, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13 NIV)

Gail;

-----Life seems to bring sudden change. The three officers went to that home understanding danger was there, but certainly not expecting to fall in gunfire. The residents had engaged themselves in anger, but probably did not expect the situation to spiral so far out of control. Everyone’s lives were suddenly changed, so it seems.
-----Jesus said, “The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.” The treasury of our hearts are not just found one day. Treasure is stored up over time. We build our treasure choice by choice, choosing feelings, thoughts, and actions moment by moment. Every individual deals some in anger. If one adds anger to his treasury, it is imperative for him to add even more copious amounts of self-control. If one is careful to add little anger, it is still important to add respect and honor for others. But some are not careful to store these in their treasury. The results of such carelessly accumulated treasures may seem sudden, however, those who watch careless accumulation through wise eyes can see some sort of trouble coming over the horizon.
-----This sad event underscores how important the treasure of the heart is. I don’t know, but I speculate the shooter did not get out of bed Saturday morning with plans to shoot police officers within twenty-four hours. What came out of that person’s treasury only seemed sudden and unavoidable. The prevention of it was in the failure to make careful investments over all the preceding years. Never despise the advise of a neighbor to back off an angry response, or to respect and honor others. That advise is better than any you will receive from E.F. Hutton. And never back down from an opportunity to give that advise.

Love you all,
