Supplying

Last week a couple from Texas sent a gift to our fledging church with a note saying, “You may use this check for the building or use it to go toward your budget – wherever the need is the greatest.” I think this generosity is reminiscent of the early believers sending collections to needy churches in other areas and communities. Paul is speaking of folks like these when he says, “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” (2 Cor 9:12 NIV)

Gail;

-----I Corinthians 16:2 surfaces in many offertory meditations and sermons on giving. Its presence in such messages illustrates the lack of attention given to context and intention of the author. The contribution for the saints to be put aside and stored up in Corinth was for aid to the saints in Jerusalem rather than the operation of the church in Corinth. If anything of this section of scripture is significant, it is that a church must have a perspective extending beyond its own walls: it must view itself as only a piece of the overall body of the Lord. There are many generous believers who exemplify this mentality in their lives. I rejoice with you in that your church has met one of them.

Love you all,
