You Are

It’s interesting that even in Scripture, unless you are a well known figure, your job description is who you are – fisherman, tax collector, or priest. Jesus asked his disciples who the Son of Man was and they replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” I’m wondering if I do something similar when Jesus enters into my conversations with others. Descriptions like Lord, Savior and Redeemer slide comfortably off my tongue, because that’s who Jesus is to me. However in probing deeper Jesus asks us the same questions He asked Peter, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” The correct answer may not always be resting on the tip of my tongue. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  (Matt 16:13-16 NIV)

Gail;

-----The disciples had referred to Jesus as the Son of God only once before - when the winds immediately calmed after He walked across the water and climbed into their boat. When Jesus called Nathaniel, he referred to Him as the Son of God because Jesus had seen him under a fig tree. To that Jesus replied, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” (John 3:50) So they watched him heal the blind, the deaf, the lame, lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons. The demons called Him the Son of God as they were being confronted. But He quickly hushed them. Jesus had not referred to Himself as the Son of God to this point. It seems that the wind paying homage to His comfort and security after his little stroll across the sea was the final piece of convincing information the disciples needed. Together, in the boat, they proclaimed He was the Son of God like Nathaniel had alone. So, when Jesus asked this question Peter was probably only more ready than the rest to blurt out what they all had begun perceiving.
-----There are a variety of answers for this question He poses to us. He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Prince of Peace. He is the Head of the Church, the Faithful and True Witness, and our High Priest. He is the Way the Truth and the Life. Twenty centuries of additional evidence is now in on who He is. And we each receive more everyday as He calms the various storms of our lives in His own subtle ways. So the answer to the question which first comes to my mind depends upon the nature of the storm I’ve seen Him most recently calm.

Love you all,
