Adoption
The last few months at church we have watched an infant foster child
growing physically and in personality. Her adoption will be finalized next week,
but she is already a member of the church family. Sunday I mentioned to her
soon-to-be father that her dark hair is really getting curly on top. Jose
smiled and pointing to his own wavy hair said, “She gets it from me.” I thought of our own adoption as believers. I
can imagine Him pointing to us and saying, ‘She gets it from Me.’ “For he chose us in him before the creation
of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he
predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance
with his pleasure and will--” (Eph 1:4-5 NIV)

Gail;
-----For some reason, the fact we are adopted has been bothersome to me. It would seem to me being created by God would make us children, knitted in the womb and stuff, you know. And so the world dances around the Maypole in celebration of all being children of God. But not all is as it seems. In fact, in this world, not much is as it seems.
-----His nature can not take part in ours. Of course, He took part in our being human. And He took our sins onto Himself, as if they were His own. But He did not take part in our deceit. He did not lie. He was not false. He maintained His truthfulness, even in taking on our sins. Especially in taking on our sins. For that is what love would do. And His nature is in upholding others while ours is in upholding our selves.
-----Even after we’ve given ourselves to the death of our old nature, being raised in newness like Him, we still must maintain our own basic survival, earning the food and shelter and stuff, and studying and practicing the Word of Truth. Our bodies as dead-weights of responsibility to continue investing in self-survival do not in actuality vanish. Nor is the fullness of knowledge and wisdom in Him poked into our minds. But we come to a desire to invest in the good and joy and hope of others. And we validate that desire with efforts to do it. But we in no way come close to becoming a total investment in those around us, else we would physically die for lack of care for our own survival.
-----The world is always wrong. The easy and comfortable way of thinking is generally trash. I feel more comfortable about adoption now. Paul speaks of a final redemption of our bodies when we die. I wonder if we then get to be actual children of His.
Love you all,
Steve Corey
Steve,
Interesting point...I always thought of you simply as my brother in Christ, but now I may have to start calling you my adopted brother. So glad we are in the same family:)
