When Simon
the Sorcerer saw the Spirt was given by the laying on of the apostles’ hands he
offered money to buy the ability from the apostles. Peter answered: “May your
money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with
money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is
not right before God” (Acts 8:19b-21 NIV). It’s not simply that
Simon wanted to buy the gift of God for himself, he wanted to buy a franchise,
“…so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” Simon was
a baptized believer and serves as a good example of how easily a wicked thought
can come into our heart.
