Critters

As I’ve mentioned previously my congregation is buying a restaurant and we’re turning it into a church. The current décor is outdoor-rustic and there are lots of animals adorning the walls. Among the menagerie is a full sized mounted cougar, an antelope head and a wing-spread pheasant. While some of the folks sort of like the call-of –the-wild atmosphere, others aren’t so sure. I’m still forming an opinion, but I just can’t quite envision the buffalo head hanging overhead while we’re singing, “We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord…”

Gail;

-----It sounds like your new facility is full of objects for conflict. I hope your congregation will proceed through its decisions with the understanding that conflict is a natural occurrence amongst any group of people. Everyone brings a slightly different perspective to the same situation, and the Lord welcomes those differences. They form the variety of personalities, skills, and abilities that more fully complete the possibilities and services of a congregation than does everyone trying to unite around the same thought and frame of mind. Our unity is in Jesus Christ, His love for us and in us, and the hope to which we have been called. When we try to extend the concept of unity to what we do and how and why we do it, then we have trouble. Looking for the way to do things that has enough angles to be meaningful to as many different viewpoints as possible is far more important in a group of believers than looking for a strong personality iconic enough for everyone to follow his way like dazed sheep. Be creative, be humble, be thoughtful, and be enamored with the importance of every soul amongst you, teach that amongst you, and what to do will emerge from ideas you never would otherwise have imagined. Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, please your neighbor for his good, to edify him, looking to his interests as well, and pursue what makes for peace and mutual up building. (Rom 15:7, 2, Phil 2:4, Rom 1419)

Love you all,
