What's in Your Cup?

After separating Malchus from his ear, Peter was commanded by Jesus, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (John 18:11 NIV) It’s clear that the cup Jesus had to drink was the crucifixion. Sometimes we compare carrying a burden to that of bearing a cross, but the truth is that none of us will bear the cross of crucifixion. We will however drink from the cup and interestingly it’s not an individual customized cup. Jesus said, “You will indeed drink from my cup…” (Matt 20:23 NIV)

Gail;

-----The possibility that any of us may be crucified must be admitted, but the likelihood of that possibility is nearly non-existent. The possibility that any of us may be otherwise put to death for our faith is much greater, whether by the government or less legitimized maniacs. So we might drink of the same cup. And most of us endure some tough circumstances sometime in our lives. Very few escape the distresses of this life. This is commonly considered drinking from His cup. But the necessity to die to ourselves in order to receive the new life of Jesus’ resurrection is certainly the cup from which we must drink. For we must die to ourselves, however effective we are at putting ourselves to death. The new life is a life of service, and the greater the life one wants, according to Jesus, the more one must serve.
