Elected
I will again be running for City Council in the April election.
Yesterday the newspaper called me for an interview and the reporter wanted to
know my thoughts on the current Council and how it has been observed that we
don’t always get along well with one another. My response was, “We’re not elected to get along, but rather
to set good policy and make good decisions.” Believers too are not immune
from feeling we must get along with others at all costs. Jesus makes it clear
where He stands, “Do not suppose that I
have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a
sword.” (Matt 10:34 NIV)

Gail;
-----I certainly hope Jesus was not meaning He brought swords for His believers to use on one another! Or to use on non-believers even! I certainly hope the meaning of civility is not battling to conquer one another and to control. I don’t think He did. Yet here are His own words you quote: He came to bring the earth a sword, not peace!
-----So what was this peace on earth, goodwill towards men garbage announced at His birth if His coming was to bring a sword upon the earth? Well, it wasn’t garbage; that sense of the sword brought upon earth is garbage. He didn’t bring a sword for people to chop at each other. The world is full of the treacherous deceit of self ambition. Christ brought the peace of truth and love into the place of this treachery. At that, treachery draws the sword against men. But the sword Christ gave to His disciples is for drawing against men’s treachery, not against men.
-----I am proud of you for your good response. To merely smooth over the top of ideas and lay down to dreams of peace and goodwill is treacherous. No matter how lovey-dovey and sicky-sweet we get, circumstances are circumstances, budgets are budgets, and human behavior is human behavior. We can think precious utopia till we drop dead, but until we realize the connection between incentive and reward, behavior and consequence, government and caution, it will be our troubles putting us in the very blender we think to be the effect of peace. That is not peace. It is everybody getting chopped down into meaninglessness.
-----No. I won’t go into that good blender, either. We shall remain outside it with swords drawn against every idea running counter to truth and good sense. Good arguments will produce either good conclusions, or good clarity as to who is being too egotistical to take part in the process after the next election. Now, if we only had a news media as concerned about the accuracy of the perceptions it delivers...
Love you all,
Steve Corey
