Makeover

There are a variety of television reality shows that focus on transformations – people, houses, restaurants. Recently I read that a local spa is taking contest applications for a ‘Body and Soul Makeover’ and I have to tell you I’m feeling a little indignant on behalf of the Spirit. But on second thought, maybe the Spirit and those in the heavenly realms are getting a good laugh at the idea that a spa massage and soothing music can actually makeover the soul. “For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”  (1 Peter 2:25 NIV)

Gail;

-----The road leading to destruction is wide and full of many more travelers than the narrow one leading to life. But the reason it is full of travelers is not because they are all worse of body and soul than those traveling the narrow road. Indeed, I have known many on both roads, or at least, let’s say, I’ve known many claiming to travel the narrow road and many who’ve said they would have nothing to do with some narrow old road. God alone knows the realities. But of those apparently on that easy freeway to destruction, I’ve known most to be as good or better souls than many claiming to be on the narrow path. And I’ve known a lot of people who’ve stated they know this same thing.
-----So, of all people, matter not which road they’re on, some are better of soul than others, and some are worse. And many have been worse and become better, while others have been better and have gone worse. What makes a person’s mind and emotions is vast and complex, and it is prone to mixing and matching in different ways. Some seemingly insignificant thing can trigger an inward mixing which really does eventually remake the soul. It can be as simple as a smile, or a frown, or a good back massage meeting a particularly sensitive frame of mind during a time of mental uncertainty that sets off a whole emotional realignment. I not only can imagine it happening, I’ve seen it happen; it has happened to me a few times and has tried to happen to me many other times but for my interference (Keep your heart with all vigilance; for from it flow the springs of life. Prov 4:23.)
-----I can see the arrogance in a “body and soul makeover contest“. Not that many folks who patronize the spa are going to become all that made over. Yet I can also see the nature of advertisement in it. And that’s what it actually is, just a business promotion. But although spiritual zombies can and do makeover their souls for the better, the Holy Spirit’s exclusive service is bearing the life which makes the person’s spirit alive in Christ, that is, be in contact with God, thus instilling actual new life into whatever makeover of the soul that person’s circumstances might afford. The spa can not deliver such. But it has not advertised it. At worst, it has not advertised the truth about the rest of the makeover a soul needs.

Love you all,
