The Nominee
Federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor said that never in her childhood dreams could she have thought of being a nominee to the Supreme Court. She may not have imagined herself on the Supreme Court, however her career path has certainly taken her in that direction. Ms Sotomayor does have a compelling story as a minority woman who worked her way up from the projects of New York and now is being considered for the highest court in the land. I think an even more compelling story is that of fishermen from Galilee who became disciples and were then selected for the highest court in heaven. Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” (Matthew 19:28 NIV)

-----There is a major similarity and a major difference between the Sotomayor nomination and Jesus’ choice of some fisherman as apostles. First, the similarity. Ms. Sotomayor is from humble beginnings, just as were the fisherman. They both worked hard in their respective career choices, and that built their character. But the difference is that Ms. Sotomayor not only worked herself into the ruling class, but also into the side of that class which rules by personal principle rather than by the object principle of the law as it is written. Ms. Sotomayor has been straight forward about her belief that international law and public sentiment should take part in forming the Constitution into principles. The other side of the ruling class believes the Constitution forms only the principles the men who wrote it and voted it into power meant it to have. The former subjectively interject themselves into the law, the latter humbly shelter the law from themselves. The Pharisees arrogantly interjected themselves into the Law, the fishermen, being from a more humble strain, were more likely to allow the Law and its principles to speak for themselves.
