Sampler Platter

Coming back from the fitness center the other morning I passed an SUV that had the back window rolled down and a dog’s head sticking out. It had rained the night before and the Golden Retriever, with his nose in the air and his large dangling tongue flapping in the wind, was getting a taste of the crisp morning. He was a really happy dog. “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” (Psalms 34:8 NIV)

Gail;

-----It has been pretty easy to be happy dogs here in America. The decades between 1985 and 2005 saw maybe the greatest prosperity and freedom shared by more people at any one time in the history of the world. This has made it all too easy for us who have lived in it to relate the flavor and sight of God’s goodness to feelings of physical satisfaction and security. The Christians of Somalia, or Sudan, or maybe of the second and third centuries Rome, I am sure, had to search thought carefully to strike upon the flavors and sights of God’s goodness. We may soon stumble across that need as well. But for now, yes, we are yet happy dogs amidst physical security and prosperity, certainly the products of God’s blessing. But it would be beneficial if our thankfulness were to take us to the same thoughts for striking upon God’s flavors and sights as those Somalies, Sudanese, and tortured Romans had to find.

Love you all,
