For about
six weeks my 94-year-old mother-in-law, who has lived with us for eight months,
started to go downhill physically. Ruth, who was totally deaf without her
hearing aids, became bedridden and asked that we remove her hearing aids
because they screeched in her ears every time she moved her head on the pillow.
Our limited communication was then done by mouthing words she could lipread,
hand gestures and patting her hands and face. On Friday Ruth passed away
peacefully, but for more than eight days she was in total deafness with her
thoughts. I can only imagine her ears being opened to the singing of the angels
of heaven. John wrote, “And I heard a
sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of
thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four
living creatures and the elders” (Rev 14:2-3a NIV).
