Many of us
are watching the Hawaii volcano activity. One TV newscaster interviewed a volcanologist
who said, “These eruptions can go on for months and even years.” No doubt the newscaster
was trying to draw out information from the expert when he said, “So, what can we
[man] do about this?” In the book of Job God’s hand on the earth’s atmosphere is
a good reminder that it is God who controls nature. “The breath of God produces
ice, and the broad waters become frozen. He loads the clouds
with moisture; he scatters his lightning through them. At his
direction they swirl around over the face of the whole earth to do whatever he
commands them” (Job 37:10-12 NIV).
