Career Christians

My tour of duty in the Navy was three-years and we referred to career sailors, those who were enlisted for many years, as “salty,” or an “old salt.” Jesus said, “Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other” (Mark 9:49-50).

The Sabbath is Made For Man

Some churches will not let you partake of communion unless you are a member of their denomination. My sense is they are trying to somehow protect the sacraments. I see a similarity with the Pharisees when they confronted Jesus about the disciples picking heads of grain from the field. “The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:24-27 NIV).  Partaking of the emblems, rather than being a participation with a denomination, is a participation in the blood and body of Jesus.

Applicable

There are a few verses in the Bible that I don’t understand, while others I grasp, but they are not applicable to me at that moment. Jesus taught in parables and on more than one occasion the disciples asked Him to explain the meaning of the parable. The representatives of the Sanhedrin, who were well versed in Scripture, felt the sting of the Parable of the Talents, “Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away” (Mark 12:12 NIV).

A Righteous Man

Matthew wrote, “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly” (Matt 1:18 19 NIV). An angel of the Lord intervened and revealed to Joseph that what was taking place fulfilled what was said through the prophet, and Joseph took Mary home as his wife. Scripture records very little about Joseph, but we know his character…he was a righteous man.

Shepherds Who Feed Themselves

I’ve heard more than a few sermons which left me feeling the message was more for the benefit of the pastor than instruction and edification for the congregation. Jude warns us about selfishness and greed among believers, “These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever” (Jude 12-13 NIV).

Climate Change

Last week a new report on climate change came out and environmentalists, who insist climate change is man caused, are making a renewed push for the legislature to address the issue. Prior to the Lord’s return He will give power to Two Witnesses. I wonder if environmentalist will have the same fervor to blame man for weather changes then as they have now. John wrote, “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth…These men have power to shut up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want” (Rev 11: 3, 6 NIV).

God’s Exact Representation

There are a lot of agencies that have duly sworn law enforcement officers in their organizations — the police department, sheriff’s office, state patrol, national parks, forest service, etc. I have no reason to fear a park ranger, but when I see a police officer driving behind me, I immediately look at my speedometer and then try think if I had an infraction at the last turn, the last stop or the last crosswalk. I realize I do something similar on a spiritual level. I have more fear of God seeing my sins than I do of Jesus seeing them. However, the writer of Hebrews said, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb 1:1-3 NIV).

Thanksgiving Day

The book of Leviticus describes various offerings, their observance and requirements — Guilt Offering, Burnt Offering, Grain Offering, Sin Offering, and Fellowship Offering. The NIV Study Bible footnote said, “Thank Offerings were given in gratitude for deliverance from sickness, trouble, death or a blessing received.” As we celebrate Thanksgiving and feast on an offering of turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and gravy I am truly thankful we are not under the Old Testament Law, “The meat of his fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; he must leave none of it till morning” (Leviticus 7:15 NIV).

Famished

Last Sunday my church held their Thanksgiving Day potluck dinner following the morning service. All throughout the worship service the smell of turkey and all the trimmings cooking in the kitchen waft through the sanctuary. By the time lunch rolled around my stomach was growling and I felt like I was starving to death. Smell is a powerful sense and I’m now wondering how big of a role it played in Esau’s downfall. “Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob” (Gen 25:29-33 NIV).

Washing Feet

For the last three years my husband, Bill, has dealt with nerve issues that make it difficult for him to sit, stand, or walk for any length of time. However, his most recent steroid shots cut the pain in half and he is now more mobile. After his shower Sunday morning he said, “I could even lift my foot and wash between my toes!” I have to admit that even as a care-giver it never occurred to me to wash his feet. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, “When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (John 13:12-17 NIV).

Many Are Invited

I people-watch when I’m on the treadmill at the gym. Recently a man showed up in handyman work clothes, rather than exercise work-out clothes. He didn’t use any of the equipment, but rather walked slowly through the gym looking around, stopping to watch the bank of televisions hanging from the ceiling and to occasional stretch his shoulders as though he had exercised and he was letting his muscles rest. His behavior was so odd and out of character for the environment that I began to suspect he could be casing the gym in order to burglarize it at a later date. The next day the man was again in the gym going through the same routine. He strolled around, ignored the equipment and never broke a sweat. I have no idea what the man’s story is, but it’s clear that just going to a gym does not make him health conscious. I’m reminded of the parable of the Wedding Banquet. When those invited to the banquet ignored the king’s invitation, the king instructed his servants to out into the streets and invite anyone they could find — both the good and the bad. Jesus said, “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless. “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “For many are invited, but few are chosen” (Matt 22:11-14 NIV).

Unity

In preparation for writing a book I’m reviewing the series of stories I previously published on church visits so that I can put my experience into topical categories, i.e. greeters, music, communion. In order to accommodate different tastes in worship, one liturgical church moved from having one traditional service to having two services — an early morning traditional service and a mid-morning contemporary service. At first blush it sounds like a good solution; however, attendance for the traditional service dwindled to about eight people, while over 80 attend the contemporary service. Many of us have come to accept disunity among different denominations, but we don’t often see such disunity in one body of believers. Paul said, “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ro 15:5-6 NIV).

Love Your Enemies

The aftermath of the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California is heartbreaking. In a television interview the grief stricken and angry mother of one victim said, “I don’t want prayers! I don’t want thoughts! Don’t send me any more prayers…I want gun control!” I can understand this mother wanting to blame someone or something for this senseless tragedy. However, I’m taken aback that she would strike out at people of faith as though we and our prayers are the enemy. Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt 5:43-47 NIV).

To Whom Do You Turn

An ongoing television ad pleads for Americans to donate $25.00 to Russian Jewish Holocaust survivors who are purported to be in desperate need of food, medical supplies and care boxes. The spokesperson said, “They are turning to us because they have no place else to turn.” It makes me uncomfortable when America, rather than God, is looked to as the Provider. Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life” (Matt 6:25-26 NIV)?

Through the Flames and the Smoke

The wildfires in California have scorched hundreds of acres of land, claimed over 30 lives, and burned an entire city to the ground. It’s hard to look at the devastation and see how this is used for God’s purpose. I’m reminded of the angel of the Lord describing the role of Samson, “…the boy is to be a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines” (Judges 13:5b NIV). As an adult Samson took vengeance on the Philistines, “So he went out and caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch to every pair of tails, lit the torches and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves” (Judges 15:4-5 NIV). If we look, God’s purpose can often be seen through the flames and smoke that devastate lives. 

Soldier On

We owe a debt of gratitude to all Veterans who, in the midst of personal sacrifice and hardships, remained obedient to their commanding officers. Similarly, Paul reminds believers to soldier on, “Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer” (2 Tim 2:3-4 NIV).

Specialization

For almost three years my husband has been dealing with nerve issues in the area of his hip and pelvis. He has been referred to one specialist after another, most recently a neurosurgeon. The Physician’s Assistant (PA) listened to Bill’s narrative, looked over his records and said, “And why were you sent to us?” Come to find out, a neurosurgeon works only on nerve issues from the pelvis up. The PA recommended we go to orthopedics (been there, done that), or to someone who specializes in the pelvis. It occurs to me that many believers go to the preacher for church related direction and he, rather than referring us to other church specialists, becomes the decision maker. Paul said, “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4:11-13 NIV).

Practice Hospitality

Webster’s Dictionary defines hospitality as the activity or business of providing services to guests in hotels, restaurants, bars, etc…and valet parking as the corner of the hospitality industry. For the believer hospitality is not an industry, but rather an expression of love. Paul said, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality” (Ro 12:9-13 NIV).

End of Life Preparations

I have a friend who is getting on in years and is trying to tidy up the end of her life and settle her estate. At one point she said, “It doesn’t matter because I won’t be around to care.” I'm reminded of Jesus as he hung on the cross. The Lord might have easily said, “It doesn’t matter because I won’t be around to care.” However, the Lord in fact did care, “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home” (John 19:25-27 NIV).

God’s Servants

Since 2016 the progressive left, the media and yes, even some people of faith, have fought against the election of President Donald Trump. Christians need to be reminded that God does not make mistakes with those He puts in authority and we must take Paul’s words to heart, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor” (Ro 13:1-7 NIV).

Conforming to His Likeness

A refrigerator magnet for dog lovers reads, “Lord help me to be the person my dog thinks I am.” As a Christian I have an image in my mind of what it means to mature in faith and be more Christlike. However, it never occurred to me to ask the Lord to help me be the person that God thinks I am. Paul said, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” (Ro 8:28-30 NIV).

Scattered Sheep

I’ve visited a fair number of local churches whose membership has dwindled and now their weekly attendance ranges from two to 12. Pastors offer a number of explanations — older members dying, people moving, lack of youth programs, congregational splits, etc. However, never has a pastor attributed his scattered flock to the lack of leadership. Peter said, “To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away” (1 Peter 5:1-4 NIV).

God the Father

An advertisement for a local university offends my parental instinct. The ad said, “Close enough for your parents to visit; far enough that they can’t just show up.” Trying to undermine parental authority is as old as creation. “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’” (Gen 3:1 NIV)? I can only imagine Adam and Eve’s surprise when God just showed up on campus, “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you” (Gen 3:8-9 NIV)?

Columnists

I’ve started to skip over reading newspaper columns written by local columnists. Even the religion columns, written by people of faith and local pastors, have become self-focused rather that issue focused. The columnists have made themselves the central figure in all the anecdotes, examples, jokes and story illustrations. Critiquing these columns has given me a greater appreciation for the New Testament writers who kept the focus of their narrative on the ministry of Jesus. For instance, Luke inserts himself only in the introduction of his Gospel, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:1-4 NIV).

Sheep Without a Shepherd

President Trump sent a message to the human caravan of people trying to force their way into America, “Turn back. You will not be allowed to enter the US.” However, the people are not listening to the President, but rather to the leaders of the caravan. I’m somewhat surprised that US officials haven’t spent more time trying to discredit and expose these faux leaders to the people in the caravan. Without these leaders the caravan would become shepherd-less and disperse. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep” (John 10:11-13 NIV).

A Time is Coming

The mass shooting in a Pittsburgh Synagogue has left the Jewish community reeling and America grieving. In his online rantings the perpetrator wrote, “They are committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews.” Not only did the killer hate Jews, but I suspect that in his warped mind he felt he was doing America a service by killing Jews. I see a similar situation in New Testament times when Jewish leaders of the day felt threatened by Jesus and his disciples and they wanted to kill them. Jesus said to his disciples, “All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you” (John 16:1-4 NIV).

Understanding vs. Accepting

Jesus told the Jews, “Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:49-51 NIV). Some disciples could not accept the teaching that the flesh of Jesus was real food and his blood real drink and many turned back and no longer followed Jesus. The NIV study footnote on John 6: 60 states the, “Teaching was hard to accept, not hard to understand.” The same thought process is prevalent today. We understand what the Word of God says…we just don’t want to accept it.

Where Your Treasure Is

A woman in a television ad said, “The good we do here is the only thing that will be left when we leave this earth.” I have to laugh at the thought of society, or even my family for that matter, remembering my good deeds beyond a couple of generations. Jesus, on the other hand, puts our legacy in heaven, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt 6:19-20 NIV).

Thieves and Robbers

Even though America’s immigration laws need to be restructured, there still remains today a legal gateway for people to immigrate to the US. Those who illegally force their way into America are in effect, stealing our national sovereignty. Jesus used the Shepherd and His Flock as a figure of speech to demonstrate a similar situation on the religious landscape. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep… “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:1-2, 7-9 NIV).

I Pledge Allegiance

As I watch video news reports of the human caravan trying to reach the US I’m struck by the fact that these folks carry with them flags of Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela and Mexico. They obviously love their own countries and do not want to relinquish their national identity. They want to live on American soil, but are unwilling to take up the American flag. I see a similar picture in those who want the blessings of the cross, but are unwilling bear allegiance to Christ, or to take up their cross. Jesus said, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matt 10:37-39 NIV).

Stop Sinning

An invalid of 38 years was at the Sheep Gate and Jesus asked if he wanted to get well. Jesus healed the man, “Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you”” (John 5:14 NIV).  I’m now trying to wrap my head around how an invalid of 38 years continues to sin.

Fulfillment of Scripture

On more than one occasion Jesus read or reference a passage of Scripture and then He told those listening He was the fulfillment of that Scripture. When I read the Bible, I look for ways to apply the Word to my life, but I’ve never consciously looked for instances where I too am the fulfillment of Scripture. Paul said, “Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith” (Gal 3:6-9 NIV).

Make Your Election Sure

This is the season of elections and on a worldly level we sometimes feel desperate to have our candidate win. Believers too have an election where we need to make sure we will receive a welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Peter said, “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins” (2 Peter 1:5-9 NIV).

A Reboot

Physical demon possession is very real and not something I joke about. However, electronic possession is another thing all together. I just purchased a new cell phone and the apps, which have demon-like characteristics, are intent on taking control. Icons move, auto-correct speaks its native language and Bixby refuses to leave no matter how many times I’ve cast it out. I’ve learned that some instances call for turning the phone off and doing a reboot. Spiritually speaking there are times when people of faith also need to do a reboot. Peter said, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus” (Acts 3:19-20 NIV).  

The Lottery

Although it’s frowned upon by some believers, there are people of faith who play the lottery, bet on horse races and wager on sports teams…and sometimes they actually do win a jackpot. There’s no doubt in my mind that these winners are convinced their good fortune is a blessing from the Lord. However, the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness gives me pause. For 40 days Jesus was tempted by the devil, “The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours” (Luke 4:5-7 NIV.)

Begging Him

Merriam-Webster defines “beg” as: To ask for as charity; to ask earnestly for. People begged Jesus to heal them, or to heal their loved ones — those with leprosy, the blind, the demon possessed. When the Lord hasn’t answered one of my prayers for healing, I often revert to asking Him for peace, understanding and acceptance in the situation. However, I’m now wondering if, by changing the focus of my petition, I’ve forgotten how to beg. Mark recorded, “As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed” (Mark 6:54-56 NIV).

The Foundation

Hurricane Michael devastated the beach front Florida panhandle. After watching video of the destruction, I have a profound new appreciation for the Lord’s thoughts on the Wise and Foolish Builders. Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matt 7:24-27 NIV).

Best Seller

I listen to cable TV news the same way many people listen to the radio. Hardly a program segment goes by without the host, guest or the news anchor promoting their most recent book. No doubt all these authors have dreams of their books becoming a number one best seller, and in fact some do make the best seller list. I’m quite certain the Gospel writers never promoted their books and could not have imagined they would become contributors to the best selling Book of all times. Luke introduces his book, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:1-4 NIV).

Rolled Away

Jesus died and was placed in the tomb. “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb” (Mark 16:1-3 NIV)? There are times in our lives when we come up against situations that are out of our control and we too worry and wonder about who will roll the stone away. We need to be reminded that an angel of the Lord rolled away the stone even before the women got to the tomb.  

I See You

 During most communion meditations the speaker will explain that the emblems, the cup and the bread, are used in remembrance of Jesus. They are a reminder of the Lord’s sacrifice — his life, death and resurrection. Recently a speaker caught my attention when he said, “You should see Jesus in the cup and you should see Jesus in the bread.” I was reminded of a picture illusion where you try to find a picture within a picture. As Christians we train ourselves to look for the Lord in our everyday life, but even mature believers can sometimes fail to see Him. Jesus said, “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me’” (Matt 25:37-40 NIV).

The Stoning of Kavanaugh

The Judiciary Committee Confirmation hearing for Judge Kavanaugh, as well as the confirmation vote in the Senate, was riveting. Both events reminded me of the account of Stephen before the Sanhedrin where false charges were brought against him in order to stir up the people, the elders and the teachers of the law. “Then the high priest asked him, “Are these charges true”” (Acts 7:1 NIV)? In the form of a history refresher lesson Stephen called out his detractors, then looked into heaven and saw the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. “At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul…And Saul was there giving approval to his death”” (Acts 7:57-58, 8:1 NIV). Similar to Saul, Republican Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski gave her approval for the stoning of Kavanaugh in order to kill his nomination to the Supreme Court.    

Learning Our Lesson

I struck up a conversation with a young receptionist and learned that the previous weekend her boyfriend physically abused her and, in her anger and her escape, she totaled her car. With bruises on her arms and the scratches on her neck I encouraged her to file a police report, but she had already decided to chalk it up to a bad experience, “I’ve learned my lesson. I got rid of my boyfriend and I won’t ever let this happen again.” She then went on to say that this was not the first time the boyfriend had knocked her around. Common sense tells me she should have learned her lesson after the first incident. However, Paul reminds me that common sense doesn’t always win out over our actions, “So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members” (Ro 7:21-23 NIV).

Exploiting the Church

I was surprised when I read that Judas Iscariot was given the same abilities as the rest of the disciples. “He [Jesus] called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness” (Matt 10:1 NIV). As keeper of the moneybag Judas was known to help himself to the money and he betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Lacking any scruples where money is concerned, I have to wonder if it crossed his mind to ask people to pay him for driving out evil spirits, and healing disease and sickness. People today who exploit the church for financial gain would do well to heed the same warning Peter gave to Simon the Sorcerer, “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin” (Acts 8:20-23 NIV).

Iron Sharpening Iron

I recently had a great conversation with a Jehovah’s Witness. She said, “I know we don’t come from the same faith, but when I had a family crisis I thought of Jesus saying…” For the next 30 minutes we mingled Scripture with our life experiences. Neither of us were on a soapbox preaching at one another, nor were we trying to convert the other to our denomination. It occurs to me that within our own denominations we’re so busy practicing fellowship that we neglect in-depth Scriptural conversations. Proverbs reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17 NIV).

For All Have Sinned

Because of the sexual misconduct allegations from Christine Blasey Ford against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh I looked up sexual assault in the dictionary. Generally speaking sexual assault is defined as any unwanted sexual contact. I believe that most women today can all say we have experienced some sort of “unwanted sexual contact.” However, I’m not convinced that the sin connected with unwanted sexual contact always rises to the level of assault. For instance, young neighborhood children convincing a younger child to play doctor, or having to dodge old Uncle Herb at family reunions because he hugs women to tightly just to cop a feel. The Psalmist wrote, “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:8-12 NIV).

Righteous Indignation

During confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court, nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh came out with verbal guns blazing. Not only was Kavanaugh defending himself against accusations of sexual misconduct from Christine Blasey Ford, but he put the committee and the public on notice that he intended to fight to stop people from disparaging his reputation and his character. Similar to people accusing President Trump of not acting Presidential, some people are now saying that Kavanaugh’s righteous indignation wasn’t the decorum they expect of a Supreme Court Justice. Jesus faced the same situation in his day when many thought He wasn’t acting Christ-like enough. Who could have imagined the Messiah would have done a housecleaning in the temple, “Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves” (Matt 21:12 NIV).

God Intended it for Good

All the major media outlets were riveted to Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s opening statement defending himself against the charge of sexual misconduct 36 years ago. Mixed in with his emotional defense Kavanaugh gave witness to his personal faith and testimony about God. There was no time limit put on Kavanaugh’s opening statement. There were no interruptions from the committee members or protesters, and no media outlets cutting-away for a commercial break. Who could have ever imagined that Kavanaugh’s devastating experience actually gave the Lord the opportunity for an uninterrupted platform on liberal media sites. While the Democrats have used this hearing to harm, delay and deny Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court, I’m reminded of Joseph forgiving his brothers for selling him into slavery. “But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them” (Gen 50:19-21 NIV).

More Highly Than You Ought

Yesterday was not a good way to start the day as I arrive at the gym at 6:00 a.m. and encountered a patron yelling at the front desk employee for not having better customer service. I don’t know the story behind the patron’s grievance; however, in my mind the $20 monthly membership fee she pays does not entitle her to verbally abuse an employee in front of other clients. In the church we see something similar from a few who feel that a measure of entitlement allows them to throw their weight around. Paul reminds us, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you” (Romans 12:3 NIV).

Obey

I interview local law enforcement officers for a newspaper series “Answering the Call.”  One question I like to ask is, “What can the community do to help you do your job?” The officers have given readers a lot of good pointers such as, keep a record of serial numbers, if you see something say something and just continue to give us your support. Recently one officer kept his response short and simple, “Obey the law!” Not unlike the officer’s perspectives, most of us have ideas about how to help the church expand the Kingdom of God, but I can hear Jesus keeping it short and simple, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:28 NIV).

What is that to you?

With my personality I want things in life to be fair, equal and with no one person favored over another. That being said I empathize with Peter. Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me” (John 21:18-19, 21, 23 NIV)! Peter’s first reaction was to look at fellow disciple John and ask Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus sidestepped Peter’s question and went to the heart of the issue, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

The Witness

After Peter denied the Lord three times, “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly”” (Luke 22:61-62 NIV). In my mind this has always been a powerful and intimate moment between Jesus and Peter. However, the only reason Peter was even allowed into the court of the high priest was because John (presumably) was known to the high priest (John 18:15-18). Although it’s not stated, it seems apparent that John, a fellow disciple, actually witnessed Peter’s denial.

The Light of the World

A body-builder covered with tattoos walked into the gym wearing a camouflage muscle shirt and camo knee-length shorts. I couldn’t help but wonder if believers don’t sometimes present themselves to the world in a similar fashion…hiding our spiritual strength behind tattoos and camouflage. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:14-16 NIV).

The Accusers

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been accused by Christina Blasey Ford of having inappropriate sexual contact 36 years ago. Kavanaugh denies the allegation and is ready to face his accuser; however, Ford is refusing to testify in public until there is an FBI investigation. I’m reminded of the woman who the Pharisees said was caught in the act of adultery and they made her stand before the group. The Pharisees, similar to today’s progressive left, were using their questions as a trap in order to have a basis for accusing her. I predict that if Ford continues to refuse to testify before the committee the outcome will be similar to that of the woman. Jesus said, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared”” (John 8:10b-11a NIV).

Only by Prayer

I normally think of Jesus casting out demons as His healing the mind of a person possessed by an evil spirit. However, there are numerous accounts of Satan causing physical afflictions and I’m now wondering if chronic pain sufferers should consider that their pain is caused by a demon. People in constant pain regularly ask for healing from God, but most of us would not think of asking the Lord to cast the demon out of our back, shoulder or neck. A man’s son was possessed by an evil spirit that robbed him of speech, but the disciples were unable drive the spirit out. After Jesus drove out the deaf and mute spirit the disciples asked the Lord why their attempts were unsuccessfully. Jesus said, “This kind can come out only by prayer” (Mark 9:29 NIV).

Naïve People

I play an online word game that allows participants to chat with one another and I’ve encountered a few purported men who say they want to be friends, but who are actually looking for lonely women to scam. “Sweetie…, my dear…, my darling. So, are you happily married and do you have children?” Believers know to be on our guard when dealing with people in the world. However, we are often too trusting with those who are purported to be believers. Paul said, “I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people” (Ro 16:17-18 NIV).

Unworthy

The Centurion’s servant was sick and about to die. He sent his friends to Jesus, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (Luke 7:6b- 8 NIV). Jesus uses the Centurion as an example of someone with great faith. However, I’m struck by the fact that the Centurion felt himself unworthy to approach the Lord, or to have the Lord come under his roof. I can’t help but wonder how many people today fail to approach the Lord simply because they feel themselves unworthy.

Abandoned Prayers

By the time the angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, both he and his wife Elizabeth were well along in years and Elizabeth was barren. It’s apparent that the couple prayed for children earlier in their life; however, I suspect they had long since abandoned that particular petition. Luke wrote, “But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John” (Luke 1:13 NIV). I can imagine Zechariah’s mind racing, “Prayer, what prayer? Oh…that prayer. You mean it has just now been heard?” I find it comforting to know that God heard my prayer even though I may have long ago given up hope on the prayer being answered.

Running Aimlessly

Every morning when I go to the gym there is a petite woman who runs on the treadmill for 45 minutes straight, pausing only to check her Fitbit. As she runs she makes loud grunts as her lungs strain for breath, the large varicose vein on one leg bulges and her fair skin turns pink with exertion. Yesterday she paused, slapped the Fitbit on her wrist a couple of times as though trying to make it work correctly and said an expletive. It was as though she was angry not only with the wrist monitor, but with her body because her heartbeat was not up to the level she thought it should be. Following yet another expletive she sprinted and pushed her body even harder in order to increase her heart rate. People of faith also run, but they run their race in such a way as to get the prize — a crown that will last forever. Paul said, “Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize” (1 Cor 9:26-27 NIV).    

False Evidence

As the narrative surrounding President Trump continues to unfold it is clear that his enemies have looked under every rock for false evidence and false witnesses in order to remove the duly elected President from office. When Jesus was before the Sanhedrin He was in a similar situation. “The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” The high priest wanted a response from Jesus, but He gave none. This is where the similarities between the Lord’s and Trump’s situations end, “But Jesus remained silent” (Matt 26:59-61,63 NIV).

Hear His Voice

Social media has a video clip of tabby cat watching and listening to a smart phone. The cat slowly moves the end of his tail as his eyes focus on the smart phone screen. After a minute or so the cat lowers his head and smothers the phone with his face trying to get as close to the image and the voice as he can. The photo caption on the video said, “He sees his owner's video in the smart phone, he died some time ago...” It is both heartbreaking and heartwarming to see the cat caresses the image and voice of his decreased owner. It occurs to me that when most of us read the Bible we’re in study mode. Seldom do we lovingly caress the image and the voice of the Lord as He speaks to us though the Word. The writer of Hebrews said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Heb 4:7b NIV).

 

What’s Mine is Not Yours

On the political landscape many on the left want to push America into socialism where the wealth of one person is taken away from them and given to another. I hadn’t given any thought to socialism on the religious landscape until I read the Parable of the 10 Virgins. The 10 Virgins fell asleep while waiting for the Bridegroom, who finally arrived at midnight. Jesus said, “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour” (Matt 25:7-13 NIV).

Life is a Curve Ball

I enjoy watching The Incredible Dr. Pol on Net Geo Wild. Doctor Jan Pol is a Dutch-American veterinarian who specializes in large animals, but will treat any animal that needs help. In one episode the owner of a small dog was distraught when Doc Pol had to remove the dog’s eye. Pol reassured the pet owner that the dog was fine, “Animals are not handicapped, they just think life threw them a curve.” I’m now wondering if God ever views his people as being handicapped. The Prophet Isaiah said of Jesus, “He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases” (Matt 8:17 NIV).

Reckless Words

I recently quoted a government official for a newspaper article and he later said, “I know that’s what I said, but that’s not what I meant.” I’ve seen something similar in sermons and public meditations where speakers misspeak, but rather than correcting their words they just assume their audience will understand what they meant to say. Proverbs warns, “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18 NIV).

Serving the Lord, Rather that the Church

Recently I had lunch at a restaurant with some fellow-believer girlfriends of more than 40 years and we talked about health, friends and family. However, for the first time ever we did not mention our ministry efforts, activities in the church, or the direction of the local church. There was a time when our lives and conversation revolved around the church, but that is no longer the case. Similar to what the world is experiencing in volunteerism, Christian service in the church is waning.  It’s not that Christians don’t want to serve, but our individual ministry endeavors are taking a precedence over the collective ministry. Paul said, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free” (Eph 6:7 NIV).

Fit for a President

Before he passed away Senator John McCain planned all the details of his five separate memorial services. One TV commentator said, “McCain’s memorials were fit for a President.” I have to wonder if in planning his own funeral services that McCain wasn’t saying to America, “I’m a war hero and yet you, the voter, chose first term Senator Obama over me to be President of the United States. You did not recognize me as Presidential in life, but I will force you to pay homage to me in death.”  I suspect that McCain, in order to memorialize himself, was looking for praise from men, “…for they loved praise from men more than praise from God” (John 12:43 NIV).

Labor Day

For the believer there is not only physical labor, but spiritual labor. Paul said, “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Cor 3:7-9 NIV).

Hypocrisy

The media and left-wing Democrats feel at liberty to attack President Trump at every turn. We can all be guilty of throwing darts at elected officials, but in ignorance we fail to realize that the measure we use against others is the same measure the Lord will use against us. Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Matt 7:1-5 NIV).

Forgiveness

By all reports Arizona Senator John McCain was a man of integrity who loved deeply. I find it interesting that McCain could forgive the Vietnamese who tortured him for five and a half years while he was a prisoner of war, but refused to forgive President Trump for the political attacks during the 2016 campaign. As per McCain’s direction, President Trump is not allowed to take part in McCain’s memorial service. Jesus said, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matt 6:14-15 NIV).

Maturing

In the public education school system taxpayers would not tolerate high school juniors being taught the same curriculum used in elementary school. Public education challenges students and requires they grow in knowledge. That being said, I find it curious that we in the church continue to accept sermons and teaching which remain on an elementary level. Unless we are a recent convert, we should be moved on to more advanced training and instruction. The writer of Hebrews said, “Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so” (Heb 6:1-3 NIV).

Praise of Men

More and more I’m aware of speakers, teachers and preachers who transition to the podium by praising the person who held platform before them. For instance, a soloist or praise team will perform and the speaker who follows will invariable compliment them and their performance before moving on to their part of the program. While I understand the exchange of pleasantries, they sometimes turn into flattery and have the appearance of praise of men. Jesus spoke about the importance of seeking the praise of God. He said, “I do not accept praise from men, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God” (John 5:41-44 NIV)?

A Priest Forever

The nation grieves the loss of Arizona Senator John McCain, who up until the first of the year, continued to perform the duties of his office. I’m reminded of the priests from the line of Levi. The writer of Hebrews said, “Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office…” Senator McCain’s death, like the priests of old, prevent him from continuing in office and he is now no longer a US Senator. However, on the landscape of faith Christ is our High Priest, “…but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Heb 7:23-25 NIV).

God Breathed

People often critique publications with, “I don’t agree with everything they say, but I can read it and make up my own mind.” Discernment is a valuable skill; however, many people mistakenly approach the Bible with a similar mind set and as they read Scripture they edit out portions they don’t agree with. To people of faith Paul said, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim 3:16-17 NIV).

Blocking the Worm

I played an online word game with a man who, after only one game started a chat and began referring to me as, “My dear…, my queen….” At first, I thought he was simply flamboyant and overly dramatic, but in game two he wrote, “My darling…” I have no doubt he was trying to endear himself to some lonely, vulnerable woman and I blocked him from my game play. Paul warned us not to have anything to do with those who have a form of godliness, “They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak–willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth” (2 Tim 3:6 NIV).

Advancing the Gospel

Many of us feel we advance the Gospel through teaching, leading and work in the church. However, Paul said, “Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly” (Phil 1:12-14 NIV). People of faith sometimes forget that through the chains of disease, infirmity, circumstance and position in life, that we too have the opportunity to advance the Gospel of Christ.

Accumulating Sins

Parents know that children often try to cover-up one lie with another lie. I see something similar in Washington DC when politicians pile up lie upon lie during interviews and testimony. The Apostle John wrote about the Fall of Babylon, “Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes” (Rev 18:4-5 NIV). It gives me pause to think that sins left unrepented can accumulate.

Spiritual Warming

I don’t discount global warming, but I find it is presumptuous to think it is man caused. There are numerous Scripture references showing God controls nature and the weather…Noah and the flood, the sun going backwards, the wind and the sea obeying the Lord’s command. Rather than global warming, I consider floods, drought, forest fires, volcano eruptions, hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes as spiritual warmings. Jesus said, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah” (Matt 16:2-4a NIV).

You Did For Me

A local senior citizen’s caregiver left her client’s house with two bags; one contained laundry and the other trash. It wasn’t until the caregiver got ready to do the laundry that she discovered she had kept the trash and thrown the clothes into the dumpster. The caregiver returned to the dumpster only to find the trash had already been collected; however, a quick call to Public Works revealed that the truck had not yet gone to the landfill. The Public Works Department dumped the trash truck’s load in their parking lot and half a dozen employees willingly went dumpster-diving, found the bag of laundry and then cleaned up the parking lot. Jesus said, “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” (Matt 25:37-40 NIV).

Speak Out

Political activists continue to stifle conservatives by getting in the face of those who’s message they want to thwart. While some use a bullhorn as their weapon of choice to shout down and break the eardrums of those they oppose, others simply do not let them have a platform. Peter and John experienced similar opposition to their message. When the Sanhedrin realized the disciples were unschooled and ordinary men their tactic was to bully and give them a warning, “Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard”” (Acts 4:18-20 NIV). All believers are called to speak out and not be bullied.

Divisions in the Family of God

As I interview law enforcement personnel for a local online newspaper there is a reoccurring theme of team work and comradery. Most officers describe their relationships similar to a family, a sports team, or the military, “They’ve always got my back. We’ll do anything for one another. We’re all like family.” I’m almost envious of the fellowship enjoyed by this close-knit group of people who, at work and off-duty, keep their common goal in the forefront of their mind. Paul noted a lack of family atmosphere when he spoke to the Corinthians concerning the Lord’s Supper, “In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. … So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment” (1 Cor 11:17-21, 33-34 NIV).

Silence of the Lambs

The Sanhedrin was attentive to Stephen’s speech, a recap of Jewish history and quoted Scripture, until he said he came to his own commentary and observations, “You stiff–necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it” (Acts 7:51-53 NIV). At those words the Sanhedrin was furious, gnashed their teeth and proceeded to silence Stephen by stoning him to death. Then, as today, the world will do anything to silence those who belong to the Shepherd.

Harsh Treatment of the Body

I like to people-watch and while walking on the treadmill at the gym I recently I saw a woman who appeared frail and anorexic, yet she seemed to force herself to exercise. The rules of the world demand that people be thin, but Paul tells people of faith, “Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self–imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence” (Col 2:21-23 NIV).

Secrets

More and more political corruption, scandals and deviant behavior is being exposed. Many of these individuals never considered that someday they would be caught, publicly exposed and brought to justice. However, Paul reminds us that whether in life or in death, our sins will be surely be exposed. “This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares” (Romans 2:16 NIV).

On a Scale of One to 10

For the last few years the nerve pain in my husband’s hip and leg has sent us to numerous doctors, pain specialists and therapists. The first question that is always asked on the paperwork or by the nurse is, “On a scale of one to 10, what is your pain level now?” On more than one occasion I’ve heard Bill and other pain sufferers say, “It’s an 11.” I’m now intrigued by the idea of measuring spiritual pain and grief on a scale of one to 10 and I need look no farther than Jesus at Gethsemane to see the spiritual pain scale of an 11. “Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me” (Matt 26:36-38 NIV).

Misplaced Aspirations

When America’s Got Talent contestants are interviewed they’re often asked what winning the contest and a million dollars would mean to them. The responses are all similar, “This is my big break. This will change my life. This is my last chance. It means everything. This is what I have lived for.” Believers are not immune from dreams of earthly success; however, we know Who will change our life and Who we live for. Paul said, “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires” (Ro 8:5 NIV).

Use Caution

When driving I often stop on a yellow light and my husband reminds me that yellow means caution and red means stop. I do something similar with Scripture. Jesus told his disciples to be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees and they were confused. They thought Jesus meant bread, but he meant to be on guard against their teaching. When I read that passage (Matt 16:6) I mentally put on the breaks to avoid today’s Pharisees and Sadducees (teachers). However, what the Lord is really asking me to do is use caution with teachers, but come to a full stop if their teaching is in error. “…he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees” (Matt 16:12 NIV).  

Look Here is Water

Some churches schedule times for baptisms in order to make it more convenient for the staff. Other churches keep their baptismal ready at all times and offer an invitation at every worship service. I feel, out of consideration for the moving of the Holy Spirit, the waters of baptism should always be available. If the baptistery always stood ready making salvation decisions could mirror that of Philip and the Ethiopian, “As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” (Acts 8:36 NIV).

The Value of Godliness

People who work out in the gym are there for various reason. Some older folks are just trying to keep up their flexibility, the overweight want to lose the extra pounds, the handicapped are strengthening their weaknesses and the body builders are working on image. Paul could walk into today’s gym and his words would still be applicable, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Tim 4:8 NIV).

Your Inner Self

I recently took advantage of the offer for a free seven-day gym membership. As a people watcher I’m amazed at the number of people, men and women alike, who spend hours bodybuilding and then cover up their work with tattoos.  I overlook the chiseled features, powerful pecks, and bulging biceps and my eyes are drawn to undistinguishable designs and graphics that cover their arms, chest and legs. I’m reminded Peter’s charge to the women of his day, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV).

Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Jesus taught his disciples to pray and I’ve always found one phrase in the Lord’s Prayer bewildering, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt 6:13 NIV). However, once I combine this thought with the temptation of Jesus it makes more sense, “Then Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil” (Matt 4:1 NIV). It’s almost as though I can hear Jesus telling me, “I’ve been there, done that and you don’t want to go there.”
